Year 3 Science Trip to Sutton Courtenay Environmental Centre

Year 3 Rye St Antony SchoolLast Thursday, Our prep school, Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed their science trip to Sutton Courtenay Environmental Centre to learn about fascinating flowers and intriguing trees. The day started off with Year 3 getting hands-on with exploring the centre’s new vegetable patch. The children rubbed the leaves between their fingers to see if they could work out which herb had been planted. They were then able to pull up their own radishes, which they tried and tasted during lunchtime! Their next activity was to create their own models of the parts of plants using the nature around them. They were then challenged to label the different parts of a flowering plant, which Year 3 did successfully and amazed Hannah (the leader) with their excellent plant knowledge! On the way to their next activity, Year 3 walked through the Willow Wishing Tunnel, where lots of special wishes were made! For their next activity, Year 3 learned about pollination. Four children dressed up as flowers, and the rest of the class were bees collecting pollen to bring back to the hive! There was lots of excitement to see which team could collect the most pollen! The children then learned about the different trees – they had to get up close and personal with the different trees by being blindfolded. They had to see what the tree felt and smelled like. Afterwards, they looked at the different leaves and had to use a leaf key to identify the different trees around the site. For their last activity of the day, Year 3 learned how to make newspaper plant pots and planted their own seeds to take home to grow!
