Year 3 Egyptian Workshop

On Thursday, Year 3 had a very exciting and interesting Egyptian Workshop Day to help them with answering their enquiry question ‘Who were the Ancient Egyptians and how do we know about them?’. They all arrived at school dressed as Egyptians where they were met by Dr Worrall who is an Egyptologist. They all took part in an Egyptian quiz where they had to hunt for key information ready to feedback to Dr Worrall. They then tried to solve the Riddles of Sphinx so that they could continue with their journey through ancient Egypt. After break, the children enjoyed translating hieroglyphics into English to learn how the Egyptians calculated measurements to build pyramids. Year 3 now know that Egyptians measured in cubits, palms and fingers. They thoroughly enjoyed a very competitive game of Hounds and Jackals, an Egyptian board game where the children used Egyptian dice. To conclude the day, Year 3 learnt about the mummification process and learnt how organs were removed and put in canopic jars, how the brain was removed and which organs were left in the body. They all took part in a burial parade and had important jobs such as carrying the body, carrying the Book of the Dead, carrying offerings, closing the sarcophagus and the wailers.

They had a wonderful day!
