The Big Bang Science Fair

On the 23rd of June, Year 7 and 9 headed out to the NEC Birmingham for the Big Bang Science Fair. There were stalls and stations with activities for the girls to do, ranging from drones to domes, CGI to CPR, Air Force to Archer2 (the UK’s national supercomputer) there was plenty on offer. Sophie Sawrey-Cookson writes “I learnt…if a nuclear reactor was the same size as a gummy bear it could make a car go for 20,000 miles”, imagine not having to fill up a tank! Whilst one of Amber Potter’s highlights was learning to “code a drone and control it”.

There were also chances to listen to career orientated talks, one of which was from Andrew Smyth (a finalist of the Bake Off in 2016) whose passion is combining engineering with baking. Ellie Jeffrey’s reflects on the talk saying “It was really interesting because he loved engineering and he had a kitchen at university and so he started cooking….He said that if your like two things why not put them together because just because someone has not done it before doesn’t mean you can’t.” He encouraged the girls to combine their creative passions and outlets with scientific ones, that the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive but rather have far more overlap than you could imagine.
