About Niamh

Niamh joined Rye St Antony School in Year 10 in September 2022 after moving from Ireland. Her favourite subject is Textiles and Food and Nutrition. After joining Rye, she really enjoys English and Maths.

On Subjects: Senior Girls School OxfordIn English and Maths, I didn’t use to look forward to my classes at my last school but at Rye there is a different curriculum which I really like. I’ve enjoyed studying “Romeo and Juliet”, it was fun to analyse the text with its timeless themes that make it relevant today. I also really like Maths now, as my classes are interactive and the teachers make me want to learn.

Her Favourite Subject: My favourite subjects are the ones I can be most creative in, especially Textiles and Food and Nutrition. Considering I used to not like them, English and Maths are also now in my top subjects!  I’m looking forward to creating and completing my creative textile work on the “Four Elements” in Textiles and progressing in skills in Food & Nutrition, especially learning more recipes!

Her Skills :  I feel I have progressed definitely in Textiles any my needlework skills. I have more confidence in sewing and stitching, both freehand and using a machine. I really enjoy the project work we do in class and we have been studying some amazing work from the textile artist, Cas Holmes. We are now doing project work on the “Four Elements” which consist of Earth, Wind, Fire and Air and will depict these elements using different textile techniques such as felting and weaving.

Favourite place at Rye:  I really like my form room, it is such a welcoming space and the girls in my form make it feel homely, I felt really welcomed when I joined especially considering I joined at the start of Year 10.

Career ambitions  I am hoping to go to University in the UK or Ireland after ‘A’ Levels. I am interested in a teaching course or possibly studying Textiles and Design because I like working with textiles and creating designs. I have a sewing machine at home and like making and mending my own clothes. I am also interested in working with Food and Nutrition later in life so would look at Food & Nutrition courses too.

Extra Activities: I love going to the gym for the lunchtime fitness sessions as well as football club which I really enjoy. I used to do Gaelic football at my last school which is quite different as you can use your hands and pick up the ball!

Why Rye for Her: I cherish my school for many reasons. It has been so welcomingboth the teachers and the girls have been really supportive and kind which I was really grateful for as I had not just moved schools but moved countries! I’ve especially appreciated the teachers, they have all been really patient with me and have taken the extra time to go through parts of work I have missed in my previous school.

The teachers and school feel homely and welcoming. I like that you can go at your own pace if needed, which I needed when I joined as everything was so new,  and then you get pushed to succeed as well when they can tell you are ready for it!
