Rye St Antony National Numeracy Day

On 18th May the Mathematics Department held a special whole-school numeracy day, held in Heynes Hall.  A speaker from the Problem-Solving Company came into our prep school in oxford and set up workshops throughout the day with all pupils in Reception class up to Year 9. The sessions allowed the pupils to work in teams to solve a variety of logical puzzles, requiring teamwork, communication, tenacity, determination and perseverance – and of course, a lot of fun!  A particular favourite was the mathematical ‘escape room’ challenge!

The sessions were designed to train the pupils to develop resilience in situations where they don’t immediately know the answer. The prep school pupils developed reasoning, creativity, managing impulsivity, listening with empathy, thinking flexibly, taking risks and striving for accuracy.

As can be seen from the photographs, the pupils gained a great deal from the event and have been talking a lot about it since!  The skills homed in the sessions today are exactly what we are nurturing in lessons, and I hope pupils’ perseverance continues to grow.

A separate part of the day involved members of Year 10 visiting some classes in the Prep School to teach lessons which the pupils had prepared for them. In reception class, Year 2, 3 and 4 were all shown aspects of number work, with area and volume calculations. The pupils in Year 10 were fantastic in their preparation and delivery of their material, with much care and effort going into their lessons.
