Year 5 visit to Sulgrave Manor - Wednesday 21 May 2008
22 May 2008
On Wednesday 21 May Year 5 dressed up as Tudors and visited Sulgrave Manor near Banbury. The manor is the ancestral home of the family who gave America their first President – the Washingtons. The girls enjoyed a tour of the Great Hall, kitchens and bed chambers and after a Tudor feast they learnt about musical instruments and songs from the time. Tudor writing was also attempted on slates and with quills. Lastly the girls had a whistle-stop tour of Tudor history which they re-enacted (and included Tudor dancing!)

Year 6 visit to Holdenby House, Northamptonshire
22 May 2008
As part of their studies on Britain since 1930, Year 6 visited Holdenby House on 21 May. The estate offers an excellent education project entitled World War II: Evacuee day in which the pupils learn about the evacuation experience. The girls dressed up as children of the 1940’s and were welcomed as evacuees who had just arrived from the city. Everyone was given a range of jobs to do; from cooking with rationed foods to ‘make do and mend’ tasks. The girls thoroughly enjoyed their day and many thanks to the staff at Holdenby for such a memorable day.

May Ball 2008
14 May 2008
Rye held its annual May Ball last weekend to send off Year 13 in style. The event was organised by the Upper Sixth who went to great lengths to give the ball its glamorous Hollywood theme. It was also wonderful to welcome back Old Girls and see them reunited with their former class mates.
The Sixth Form would like to thank everyone who helped in making the ball such a success. In particular, thanks to Jo Croft and Sue McIlvenna for their help in organising the event; also to all the pupils in Year 11 who waited on the Sixth Form for the evening.
To make the night particularly glamorous the organisers managed to get their hands on two classic cars which were used for photographs on arrival. Thanks to Richard Greenwood who lent a classic Rolls Royce and to Tim and Ann Dutton for their Porsche 911 Turbo.

Spring Concert
14 March 2008
In addition to Grease, the Music Department has been busy this term developing pupils’ classical repertoire as well as exploring more contemporary musical strands.
Parents and pupils were treated to a fantastic evening of music at the Spring Concert by pupils in the Senior School on Wednesday 12 March. The concert was opened with a lively version of Cabaret by the Low Fat Ensemble (soon to be renamed, now that the high fat option of Grease is no longer on the menu). The concert highlighted the rich seam of ensemble playing that the Music Department has enjoyed over the year; the T.I.R.M Ensemble performed a beautiful version of The Girl from Ipanema (see picture) and the Ivy King Quartet played the first movement of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.1 superbly. Individual performances by Julia McCourt (violin), Jessica Green (voice) Shauni McGregor (flute) should be commended too.
It is always more fun to play music with other people, and the School encourages all pupils who learn a musical instrument or sing to consider joining an ensemble to broaden their musical experience.

Rye does Sport Relief!
12 March 2008
On Tuesday 11 March most pupils at Rye took part in a continuous relay from 9.00 am to 4.00pm to raise money for Sport Relief. The relay was also a competition between the houses to complete the most laps. Staff and pupils rose to the challenge and completed the relay dressed in house colours and wearing face paints. Shouts of Hollywell! Binsey! Stonor! and Hendred! could be heard around the school grounds all day!
Pupils in Year 9 started the relay at 9.00 am with a bang, sprinting the first few hundred metres and then slowing to a steady pace or walking for the rest of their allocated time. Sixth Formers acting as marshals were based on the terrace in front of the Junior School to keep a tally of the houses, cheer everybody on as they ran or walked past, and provide the participants with refreshments. Many members staff also took part, including Mr Willcock, Dr Tebbs and Miss Jones herself!
As the day progressed, pupils from all year groups did their bit for the relay. An impressive 1091 miles were clocked up by the pupils, with Stonor completing the most laps.
In addition to the relay, cake sales were organised throughout the day to raise even more money.
The day was great fun and a huge thank you to everyone who took part; especially the Sixth Formers and Staff who acted as marshals and also the PE staff for organising the marshals.

Inspiration in Paris
4 March 2008
Pupils from Years 12 and 13 spent three days in Paris to seek inspiration for their examination pieces. Visits were made to the Pompidou Centre and the Louvre as well as many other smaller galleries. Other visits were made at the city’s tourist attractions, local monuments and areas of interest for primary sketching (a little difficult in the rain but still possible).
Our first night was spent in the Jewish area of Paris where everyone braved falafels from Johnny Depp’s favourite supplier. After acclimatizing to the local culture, our first whole day was spent sketching the local scenery including the Notre Dame Cathedral. We also visited the Town Hall to observe photography of Paris throughout the last century; including work that has been used for personal reasons and images featured in Vogue. Having “not” experienced enough culture we spent the evening catching up on some essential retail therapy and went to the cinema where some students tested their understanding of the language by watching films in French.
The second day of our trip was utilized by dropping in on the Pompidou Centre and Louvre; where abstract and classic art was viewed with a range of styles to suit everyone’s taste. That evening we plucked up the courage to climb the Eiffel tower, but its astonishing views soon calmed our nerves.
The final morning started with a challenge, as we were divided up into groups and made to find our own way to the Sacre Coeur, without the teachers’ help (they did hint at which metro stop would be the best to use however!).
Overall we had a brilliant time in Paris, many thanks to Miss Defoe for organising our stay.

As Smooth as Greased Lightning!
14 February 2008
Rye St Antony was swept back to the 1950’s with the School’s spectacular version of the hit musical Grease. Renditions of the well known tunes We go together and Summer Nights were sung with confidence by the whole cast. Alice Goodger played a very convincing Sandy, while Lucie Kenrick gave a great performance as Danny. To top things off a Rock n’ Roll band belted out the famous tunes as the girls sang their songs.
Thanks to staff and crew, the Rendall building was transformed from a school into a diner with hot dog signs and all! Huge banners of Rydell High and Lichtenstein pop art adorned the stage. The audience, sitting around tables, were treated to waitress service by pupils who had volunteered to help out.
The performers connected well their characters and seemed to be very familiar with the script; in particular Jodie Mills gave a brave performance of Rizzo, while Olivia Knops’ unique style gave us a great Eugene. Behind the scenes the Costume Team had worked tirelessly to create 1950’s outfits for the whole cast, including all the supporting girls and guys of Rydell High.
The technical side of the performance was impressive; the lighting, managed by Charlotte Bagwell and Hannah Grovenor added to the exciting atmosphere.
Overall the musical was excellent and the sell out audiences recognised this fact. A huge thank-you to Mrs Evans (Head of Drama) and Dr Tebbs (Head of Music) and the whole Cast and Production Team for giving us such a polished performance of one of our favourite musicals.

Imogen Stanley Wins Prestigious Sailing Award
28 January 2008
Year 12 Pupil Imogen Stanley (16) picked up one of sailings most prestigious awards, the RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year -Thames Valley, on Saturday 12 January at the Collins Stewart London Boat Show. Presented by sailing legend Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the awards recognise the outstanding achievements of youth sailors across the country.
“I’m a little surprised but very proud to be given the award. It feels great and it has given me a real confidence boost. I’m sure it will help me to increase my sponsorship too” she told us.
Imogen was awarded the Thames Valley trophy after achieving some outstanding results over the 2007 season. Sailing in their 420 high performance racing dinghy, Imogen and her crew, Kate Mcgreggor, started off the year with a bang, coming 7th in the 420 Worlds in New Zealand in January. Then in April, Imogen, a member of the RYA 420 Youth National Squad, won top girl crew racing against the best 420 youth sailors in the country, at the RYA Youth Nationals. In August at the 420 National Championships, she did it again, scooping another 1st girl trophy.
Along with the 11 other regional winners, Imogen enjoyed an action packed VIP day at the show, thanks to the RYA and Raymarine. Activities included pitching her skills against the others in a selection of deck games followed by a lunch and tour aboard HMS Exeter.
Winners were awarded an impressive trophy along with some kit, including a hand held radio, thanks to Raymarine.
RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year winners are voted for by RYA affiliated sailing clubs. These young sailors have made a significant impact on youth sailing, ranging from gold medal winning achievements and overcoming adversity, to the huge amount of hard work and effort they give back to their clubs.

Grease Fundraising Pub Quiz Night- Friday 18 January 2008
10 January 2008
I am sure that you are all aware that we are in the middle of rehearsals for what promises to be an elaborate and energetic production of the musical spectacular, Grease.
To boost the production budget and banish those winter blues, I am organising a pub quiz evening at school on Friday 18 January from 7.00 pm until 10.00 pm in Heynes Hall. The quiz will have a number of rounds with questions to test all ages.
Teams of eight can be made up of parents and girls/friends from Year 11 upwards. The team entry fee will be £40.00 which will include a buffet of finger food and a glass of mulled wine on arrival. There will be a pay bar open throughout the evening which will serve both alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments.
I will also be running a raffle on the night, and I would be most grateful to anyone who could donate a prize. Anything from books, wine and flower arrangements would be much appreciated, and you may also have a contact who could offer vouchers for a particular service or leisure activity.
This fun evening coincides with a Year 11 and Year 13 Parents’ Meeting, so why not stay on afterwards and make a night of it?
Please return the reply slip by Friday 11 January to the Bursary or directly to me, indicating whether you or your daughter would like to enter a team and/or if you can donate a prize.
Yours sincerely

A Beautiful Bonfire Night
9 November 2007
Rye held its annual Firework Spectacular on a perfect autumnal evening last Friday. Parents and pupils arrived at 6.15 pm to a floodlit Langley Lawn where food, drinks, toffee apples and sweets were laid out under the gaze of seven solemn Guys. Following the trail of lanterns through the woods, guests enjoyed piping hot tomato soup around a blazing bonfire. A sumptuous bonfire night supper was served on the Lawn and the fireworks commenced at 7.30pm. As in previous years, the fireworks were as spectacular and loud as you could wish. The evening concluded with the judging of the best Guy and prizes were awarded to three deserving groups of model makers.
The Parents Committee were helped throughout the evening by an army of volunteer parents and we thank them very much. We could not have had such a successful evening without the 430 guests and helpers.

Year 4 Discover the Romans in Cirencester!
31 October 2007
Year 4 Trip to the Corinium Museum by Amy Carter
On Monday 15th October my class mates and I came out of school to the Corinium museum in Cirencester. We had lots of fun on everything, but my particular favourite was looking at all the different features in a Roman garden. They had pictures on the wall and all different types of vegetables and herbs. Then we posed on the bench like Roman ladies!
As well as looking at a Roman garden, we dressed up as Roman ladies. We put on two tunics, a cord belt, then a palla, some rings, bracelets and a trumpet brooch. We had our hair put up into a beautiful bun. We looked fabulous! Hannah dressed up as a boy and looked a lot scruffier than the girls. We were given Roman names. My name was Martia. I think Martia is a lovely name. As I put on the beautiful sky blue tunic I really felt the part!
Another thing I found interesting was the Roman mosaics: the real ones which were beautiful and the ones that we made with magnets. We made wonderful and exciting designs. They would have taken years to make even when they had all the pieces!
It was a really fun day.

Back from Spain!
29 October 2007
Welcome back to the thirty-eight girls from Years 9 to 13 who have returned from their conquest of Andalucia in Spain. Upon arrival in Malaga airport, the group was whisked away to the hotel which was not far away in Torremolinos. After a chance to settle, the girls had the opportunity to wander around the streets of Torremolinos, getting their bearings and trying out their Spanish on the local inhabitants! The trip was truly cross-curricular, encompassing elements of History, Geography and Religious Education. On the second day the girls visited probably the best example of Moorish architecture in Spain, the Alhambra Palace in Granada. This magnificent fortress and palace dates back to the ninth century and was the residence of the Muslim kings of Granada and their court. On day 7 a visit was made to the town of Ronda, a settlement literally divided in two by a massive gorge. We made a beeline for the 18th century Puente Nuevo 'new' bridge, which straddles the 100m chasm below, its views out over the Serranía de Ronda mountains were unparalleled. The girls provided the entertainment one evening with a Rye Factor revival. The hotel guests were impressed with the talent that was originally showcased in school before half-term. The girls will never forget the splendid architecture in Seville, mingling with the millionaires in Puerto Banus and making friends with the donkeys in Mijas. The school would like to thank Mrs Birtill for organising such an unforgettable trip, and all the staff who worked so hard to make it run so smoothly.

Book Week in the Junior School! (From Monday 8 October)
2 October 2007
The week beginning Monday 8 October is going to be our Book week and this year our theme is Animals. If you have any favourite animal stories, games or information books, then please bring them to school to read and share. There will be lots of fun Literacy activities going on throughout the week, as well as special events.
Monday 8 October- Key Stage One will listen to lots of animal stories read by Miss Scott.
Tuesday 9 October - All the children will be in different mixed-age groups and involved in various animal-related activities run by our Junior school staff. These will all be book-based, hands-on and most of all, fun! The children will also listen to a talk about animals by Bob Joiner, from the Cotswold Wildlife Park.
Wednesday 10 October - We will have a cake sale in the bun passage to raise money to sponsor an animal at the Cotswold Wildlife Park. If we raise £30 we could sponsor, for example, a bat, tarantula, swan or owl and with £50 we could sponsor, for example, a penguin, leopard, lion or a zebra. After counting the money we raise, we will all vote to see which animal we would like to sponsor as a school. Year 9 visit Ironbridge Gorge!
25 September 2007
Year 9 were taken to Ironbridge Gorge on Monday 24 September to learn more about Britain in the period 1750-1900. The girls have been exploring how and why Britain acquired such a large empire, and have made links to the revolution in industry that Britain experienced. Ironbridge, also known as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution provided an excellent day out for the girls. We crossed the symbolic Iron Bridge and visited the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron where we saw many exhibits as well as the remains of a water powered blast furnace. This was where Abraham Darby I perfected the smelting of iron with coke instead of charcoal. A craftsman revealed the secrets of ceramic production to the girls at the Coalport China Museum (where the girls got lots of freebies too!). The girls were then taken to meet the Victorians at Blists Hill Victorian Town. Costumed staff gave a warm welcome and a fascinating insight into how life was lived in Victorian times. Everyone poured hurriedly into the bank to exchange their money into Victorian coins and then admired the goods in the Grocers, Bakery and Sweetshop. The girls also found out about curious remedies in the Chemist, and saw the carpenter and candle maker in action. Finally everyone given the opportunity to spend the remainder of their coins at the Victorian fairground.

Those studying Art were taken to the Tate Modern to discover more about contemporary art, while those studying Textiles learnt about fashion and clothing through the ages at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The girls were really inspired and many went back to look at the exhibits again in their free time. Year 7 Parents' Meeting on Friday 14 September
12 September 2007
To Parents of Pupils in Year 7.
Dear Parent.
As you will have seen from Dates and Information, the first Parents’ Meeting for Year 7 pupils will be this coming Friday, 14 September, from 4.15 pm to 6.30 pm.
The meeting will begin with a 20-minute presentation in the Heynes Hall by Mr Brian Sharland (ICT Co-ordinator). Mr Sharland will speak about internet safety and will be pleased to take questions from both parents and pupils.
After Mr Sharland’s presentation, you are invited to go to the Rendall Hall where your daughter’s teachers look forward to meeting with you and your daughter and discussing with you her programme of study in each subject area and her plans for the year ahead in relation to her school progress during the years of her primary education. There is no appointment system for senior school Parents’ Meetings: the meetings work more efficiently if parents and girls move from one member of staff to another as is convenient.
Please take the opportunity of the meeting to see each of your daughter’s teachers and the senior members of staff who will be present: many of you already know Dr Colin Rosser (Director of Studies), and the meeting will also give you the opportunity to meet our new Deputy Headmistress, Mrs Alexandra Neil.
I look forward to seeing you during Friday’s meeting.
Yours sincerely,
Miss A M Jones,
Headmistress

Year 8 and 9 Concert is a huge success!
19 June 2007
Years 8 and 9 braved the stormy weather to show off their musical talents on Tuesday evening. The concert was kicked into action with a lively rendition of Eye of the Tiger by Louise Jamieson, Jasmine Allday, Martha Barnes and Misa Esashi. The concert saw a wide variety of instruments being played, such as the cello, saxaphone, harp, drums and trombone (just to name a few!). The excellent performance of The Rhythm of Life by the whole ensemble ended the concert on a real high. The Music Department would like to thank all the girls involved and everyone who came to support the concert.

Rye Girls Landed In Normandy
4 May 2007
From Saturday 24 March to Wednesday 28 March, Years 8 and 9 took part in a French trip to Normandy. Miss Pujos, Mr Vesty, Miss Brookes and Miss Bloomer braved hours of the singing as they made their way from Rye in the early hours of Saturday morning. They travelled by ferry and coach and stayed in Le Château du Baffy. In the mornings the girls had French lessons with a native French teacher, giving some time to recover from all the midnight conversations about ghosts the night before. The means were fantastic: French food, three courses – Mr. Vesty found it very hard to keep on his diet. They also got to make their own sandwiches, with delicious and tasty French baguettes. C’est incroyable!
On the first afternoon, the girls went to visit the Bayeux tapestry and the cathedral at Bayeux, where they marvelled at the architecture, the length and detail of the tapestry and ate ice cream. Then they visited the landing beach of Arromanches where the Allied soldiers landed in World War II. The evening was filled with another fantastic meal, and then the girls got to work off their calories by bowling.
Next morning, they had lessons again and in the afternoon they went to visit Le Mont Saint Michel, a big mount on which there is an abbey with an amazing view – it was stunning and perhaps the highlight of the trip. Not to forget the food – on that day it was crêpes in an authentic crêperie. Then… shopping!
The next day – quelle surprise – involved French food - this time at an organic bakery where they made their own bread. The girls were told how to prepare everything, in French. They found it very funny to shake hands with hands full of dough, in French! A cooking and language lesson rolled into one, in French! They all left the bakery with their own hot, delectable and decidedly French hand-made organic baguettes.
They then drove to Caen Memorial Museum where they watched a film about the war and the Normandy Landings. What was impressive was to see actual artefacts that were used in the war like soldier’s helmets, weapons and letters that were written at the time. Then, more shopping! In the evening, Mr Vesty entertained all the girls (and the staff too) with his ‘France-o-centric’ quiz. Then back to bed, and early to rise the next day to take the ferry back to merry old England – although having to leave the Chateau and the three course French meals, the fun activities, the ever vigorous and exciting staff and, of course, the shopping – made England seem a little less merry than their time in France.

Year 5 and Year 6 Eco Warriors!
2 May 2007
On Tuesday 24 April Years 5 and 6 spent the day at the Sutton Courtenay Environmental Centre - one of 90 nature reserves managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. The children were immediately made aware of the vital role this reserve plays in protecting the local habitats and wildlife under increasing threat from development and pollution (as we arrived at our destination to discover this oasis of nature sandwiched between the roaring traffic on the A34 and the Milton Business Park).
The whole day was full of exploration and enjoyment. Everyone pond dipped (without as much as a wet foot) to discover the intriguing adaptations of pond creatures. A Rye girl caught the first newt of the season. The computerised microscope took our experience to a new dimension as we observed and identified our ‘catch of the day’ creatures – dragonfly larvae x100 are a terrifying sight!
Exploring the fauna and flora of pasture and a woodland floor, we took quadrant readings and then analysed numbers and species. At one stage we were so enthralled with our task, we failed to see that we had disturbed an ant’s nest - ants were marching in every direction to find tasty flesh to bite! We were all made aware of the importance to act in a sustainable way in our everyday lives, everyone was impressed by the totally eco friendly building, where rainwater is collected to flush loos and wash hands.
To encourage visitors to recycle wherever possible the centre invites all groups to take part in a ‘Low Waste Lunch Competition’ - Rye rose to the challenge and scored an excellent mark when their waste (virtually non existent) was weighed.
After a delicious packed lunch provided by our resident chef Paul Grundy, the girls enjoyed exploring the ‘music garden’ constructed on a grand scale with recycled materials from Didcot Power Station. It was a sight to behold watching the girls entertain themselves, by wriggling their way though the withy tunnel, with whoops of laughter. Scarecrows, made during art workshops at the centre, provided another source of amusement.
On the journey home everyone was falling asleep with exhaustion, always a sign of a stimulating excursion. Yet again Rye was complimented on the behaviour of their children. It is always a pleasure to take you out girls. Well done everyone.

Fun and Learning at Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre!
28 February 2007
The Year 12 Geographers spent Friday 23 to Monday 26 February at Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre. We went to Salcombe for lunch on the Friday and had scampi and chips whilst sitting outside by the sea before making our way to the beach to have a hearty walk and fly Miss Wells’ kite! We arrived at the centre in the early evening in the POURING rain (which didn’t stop all weekend!).
We spent Saturday on Dartmoor looking at Tors and taking measurements of the River Lemon. Charlotte Elston, Rebecca Hampshire and Sophia Miller decided the best way to do this was to get waste deep in the water and to take a closer look at what then fell out of their wellie boots!
Sunday was spent in Exeter CBD looking at some of the changes that had occurred over the last 20 years and comparing the Exeter Primark stock with that in Oxford!
We had a very good time!

Results of the Year 7 Castle Competition!
23 February 2007
It was extremely difficult for the History department to judge the entries of the castle competition this year as all the entries reflected much effort and creativity. The winner was Mirianna Hobbs for her excellent motte and bailey made from sponge cake and cinnamon sticks. Second place was awarded to a joint effort from Emma Harpin and Zoe Fischer for their replica of Broughton Castle. Elizabeth Stell created a very interesting model of Framlingham Castle and its grounds which won third place. Well done everyone!

Thrilling and Filling French Festival for Year 6 Waterhouse
22 February 2007
Thrilling and Filling French Festival for Year 6 Waterhouse
Although this event was meant to take place on the February 8, it was postponed because of the snow. Finally, on Thursday 22 February, Miss Pujos and Mrs Waterhouse took Year 6 Waterhouse to Chandlings Manor to take part in a French Festival. They performed a play called Les Victoires De La Musique which included three songs. It was an opportunity for them to watch other schools singing and showing sketches performed solely in French.
At break time they had had the opportunity to eat croissant, pain au chocolat and to meet students from other schools – some of them even had a conversation in French! There were, in total, nine independent schools from the area who took part in the festival. Year 6 Waterhouse has an excellent time and are looking forward to attending other events where they can learn languages and eat indigenous dishes in the future. Year 6 Reed were not left out, as Miss Pujos organised a French breakfast (or petit dejeuner) on Thursday February 1 where they had to buy food by asking in French and using Euros. They too enjoyed this experience a lot and derived a great deal of tasty learning.

Shakespeare Play Performed Prior to Midsummer
21 February 2007
Shakespeare Play Performed Prior to Midsummer
Finally we saw the last show of A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed to awaiting friends and family on Monday evening. The cast and crew had worked tirelessly throughout the day to get the show back up to the standard it had been before half term despite the afternoon panic of the smoke machine setting off the whole school fire alarm. All of this hard work was well rewarded with a fantastic performance and an extremely responsive audience.
A huge thank you to everyone involved – cast, crew and audiences for making this whole project one for Rye to be proud of!

Thursday 8 February 2007 Snow Slows School
8 February 2007
About a third of the school has arrived, in spite of the heavy snow, and we are therefore running a special timetable, girls working in year groups rather than their usual groups. Those Year 11 girls who are in school today will complete their GSCE Food and Nutrition module as planned, and for those who, because of the adverse weather, are absent today, application will be made to the awarding body for a new date for their completion of the module.
It will be assumed that girls already in school today will stay until the end of the day. Parents who wish their daughters to leave school early should notify the School Office so that arrangements can be put into place accordingly.
Tonight’s Ballet and Judo are cancelled. A decision about tonight’s performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be made at lunchtime: please telephone the School Office 1.00pm (01865 762802) to check arrangements.

Year 9 Have Got the Whole Globe In Their Hands
8 February 2007
The English Department is organising a visit to The Globe Theatre for Year 9 pupils. This day visit will include a tour of the theatre and a practical workshop session on the set scenes from The Tempest which the girls are studying for SATs. We are very pleased to have been able to book places on this Globe Education study day and are confident that it will provide experience and knowledge which pupils will find valuable in preparation for GCSE English, as well as for their work this year.
The cost of the visit, including travel by coach, is £22. Girls will leave Rye from their form rooms at 8.30 am and should return to school at approximately 6 pm. If you would like your daughter to attend, please complete the form that her English teacher has given her (or write a letter stating that you are happy to be charged in your end of term account) and return it to her English teacher by Wednesday 21 February 2007.

Rye Girls 'Do The Business' in Paris
2 February 2007
From the 25 to the 28 of January this year, members of Rye’s sixth form, led by Mrs Savery and Mrs C Olsen, went to Paris to attend two business conferences. Although most of the group consisted of Business Studies students, other budding businesswomen from both years of the sixth form also had the chance to go across the channel to attend lectures and see some of the wonderful city that is enshrined by the Seine.
The first half day conference was entitled Business in Focus and had speakers from Eurostar and Vodaphone talking about marketing and operations, with a particular emphasis on Europe. For those students who wanted to hone their skills as an entrepreneur of tomorrow, this was very rewarding indeed. The second set of presentations was called Your Future in Europe held in the largest auditorium in Europe - according to the master of ceremonies – in the Palais de Congrais. Two thousand five hundred people attended the event which looked at aspects of living and working in Europe. The most inspiring speaker of the day was Michel Moone, producer of the Ultimo bra but the girls also saw such luminaries as ex Liberal party leader Charles Kennedy deliver speeches.
Of course, as interesting as the lectures were, being in Paris would be wasted without taking the time to enjoy the city. The girls explored Paris by foot during the day and at night they climbed the Eiffel Tower and took a boat ride through the centre of the city. They also learned that purchasing a carnet is far more economical that buying an individual billet. By the end of the trip, with all they had learned a lot from the city and the talks they had listened to, the girls were sure that one of the most important lessons they learned about commerce on the trip was shopping on the Champs Elysees.
