About Rye St Antony School

he aims of the Junior School are:

  • to develop in pupils a sense of wonder and a love of learning

  • to provide a stimulating, happy environment in which our pupils will thrive

  • to enable children to develop their talents and foster qualities of character that will lead to independence and responsibility

  • to encourage children to try their best and to build their confidence so that they can each achieve their true potential.

There are currently nine classes in the Junior School, one for each year group from Reception to Year 4 and two for Years 5 and 6. Early Years at Rye are characterized by a broad and diverse approach to the Foundation Stage. Ofsted’s most recent report noted that “Topics build on children’s existing knowledge and interesting activities provide first hand experiences which are well planned and appropriate for all children.” From the on-site Beech Tree Nursery School there is a smooth transition to the Reception Class, and from there to Key Stages One, Two and beyond. Small classes mean that children are able to develop at their own pace, receiving individual attention within a co-operative classroom ethos.

The beautiful wooded grounds offer an exciting, inspiring natural environment in which to play, discover and learn. Children are taught to care for their environment, and also to look out to the wider world of their future to understand how their behaviour can affect its development.

Our children enjoy learning through breadth of experience. Science is hands-on and experimental, making excellent use of our grounds. Creativity and imagination are encouraged in all areas (including Maths!) and Art and Music play an important part in our day. There is a strong emphasis on learning through literature and we welcome children’s authors, illustrators and poets to our special activity days. The children all enjoy their ICT sessions in the new Junior School computer suite and all classrooms have their own computers for the children’s use.

In Key Stage 1 the children are taught predominantly by one teacher with specialists being available for Music and Religious Education. We follow the National Curriculum, enhancing it where possible, and in Year 2 the children complete the end of Key Stage 1 SATs in English and Mathematics.

In Key Stage 2 the children gradually begin to have more specialist teaching so that by Year 5 they are taught exclusively by subject teachers, some of whom also teach in the Senior School. This facilitates an easy transfer into Senior School. We find that children take this move in their stride. In Year 6 the children complete the end of Key Stage 2 SATs in English, Mathematics and Science. SAT results in recent years have been excellent, both at Year 2 and Year 6 level.

Each day begins with either a Class or Junior School assembly.  The children have lessons before and after morning break.  Delicious school lunches are served in the Dining Room at 12.20 p.m.  Afternoon school for Key Stage 1 children ends at 3.30 p.m. and for Key Stage 2 at 4.00 p.m.

There are many activities and clubs on offer at lunchtimes including drama, sports, choir, orchestra and knitting. We have excellent provision for after-school care. The children enjoy a tea at 4.00 p.m. followed by supervised activities and prep for the older ones. Other after-school activities available are ballet, judo, pottery and silk-painting.

Visitors to the Junior School regularly comment on the positive nurturing atmosphere and the staff firmly believes that children thrive if they feel secure and valued within a close, child-centred environment. Children of all academic abilities can develop to their full potential when their individual needs are recognized. Challenging more able children to achieve high standards while raising the expectations of others is an important part of the school’s philosophy.

Rye St Antony is a Catholic foundation and the framework that this provides gives children a clear structure for their behaviour and attitudes. Children are taught to accept and understand diversity, to be caring citizens and to take responsibility for themselves and their own actions. Generosity and charity are part of our everyday lives. Children need to develop good, positive attitudes to learning early in their lives and we believe that, in our happy and caring school they are given the best possible start to their school careers.
