Year 1 and Year 2 travelled back in time when they visited the Chiltern Open Air Museum as part of their History and Science topic on Homes. Before visiting the museum, the children discussed what they thought homes might have been like in the past. Some children in Year 2 had predicted that the Iron Age house would be made of iron and were interested to find out that it was in fact made of wood, straw, clay and dung! Several children had correctly guessed that this home might have a real fire to cook on and candles for light. However, no one had thought they would have a fridge! Everyone was amazed to find out they made a fridge by digging a hole in the ground, lining it with clay and covering it with a wooden lid.
The children particularly enjoyed a historic cooking workshop in the 18th Century cottage. They made scones, cooked them on a griddle over an open fire and then took them back to their own warm, spacious homes to eat!
