IMPS or Injury Minimisation Programme for Schools is intended to empower young people to take personal responsibility for managing their own risk and help them cope sensibly in an emergency. When the children arrived at hospital they were met by two team leaders from the IMPS programme and split into two groups. Each group went on a guided tour of the emergency department, which allowed them to experience many of first aid concepts previously learnt in the classroom. They then took part in a session using an interactive DVD where they were taught the principles of first aid and injury minimisation. Finally they were taught the principles of emergency life support and got to practice using individual manikins.
